"Alisa Khazanova, who has been always a mascot as an actress to the Russian auteur filmmakers (to Nikolay Khomeriki in particular) shot her director’s debut in the US and it appeared to become the bravest and most surprising film of the Moscow International Film Festival. Middleground belongs to this rare category of films which could be named films-bet - as if their directors bet the cinema, as if they could get over the immutable rules of cinema grammar. For instance, to make a movie where all the action takes place on the lifeboat, like Hitchcock did it. Or to make a movie without a single editing splice, like Sokurov did. Against this background of technical extravagance (or simply tricks) Khazanova’s bet looks like insanity. Frankly speaking, she made a remake of Last Year at Marienbad, a film shot in 1961 by Alain Resnais. And this is as if she had made a remake of some abstract classical animation."
