Description:

Loosely based on the 2016 events surrounding the police investigation of a teenage suicide game controversy, the film is a procedural drama carefully balancing sensation with existential dialogues in the style of Dostoevsky.

Two federal investigators are sent to the small Russian town of Podolsk to review a cold case involving the suspicious death of a schoolgirl. Initially seeing their task as a mere PR stunt, both gradually start to lose their focus as they venture deeper into the paranoid world of conspiracy theories surrounding the case.

"The White List is as far away from the typical police procedural drama that has filled the television airwaves. It seems that this is as intended - Alisa Khazanova worked on the script for several years together with ex-film critic and director Roman Volobuev (The Last Minister). The foundation is a real story, which began with an article about “death groups” in Novaya Gazeta, and ended with no less than a change in legislation (a law was passed on criminal liability for the creation of “death groups” and inducing teenagers to commit suicide). Although this is not a literal film adaptation, but rather a story based on it."

"A sophisticated viewer can thoroughly enjoy the references and quotes. The dead blonde Anya - a good girl, but with a quirk - will remind you of Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks (another detective with a deceptive solution). The duet of detectives played by opposites - Alexei Serebryakov and Vladimir Averyanov - is reminiscent of David Fincher’s Seven or the first season of True Detective. And so on, from Twilight to Fight Club; Fincher, however you look at it, is very present here."

"In essence, The White List is an anti-detective story, and in cinematic form, it is a pure thriller where the result of the investigation is not the only important aspect, but also how this process affects all participants. The film is more interested in why the investigators cannot let go of the case, rather than the conclusion they will reach. Alisa Khazanova skillfully works with the actors and employs simple yet effective techniques (including the use of different shot sizes and sound design) to maintain the necessary level of viewer attention, even when the film slows down in a series of monologues."

"The White List is extremely relevant today. Here, too, everyone talks about collective guilt and responsibility: over a glass of wine in a restaurant, in a shrink’s office, through prison bars. Over and over again, they forget about the important thing - the children. By revealing suicide statistics to the world, the columnist multiplies the numbers in pursuit of ratings; closing cases, the investigator is looking for a scapegoat for the sake of a bonus or promotion. And evil forces from the Internet are to blame for each specific death of a child. Are we all guilty? Or no one at all? Being carried away by abstract numbers and philosophical reasoning, the film's characters ignore concrete destinies. Judging by the stories of teenagers described in the film, children take their own lives not out of revenge, but in an attempt to shout to the world. Podolsk, Russia, planet Earth - something is wrong with all of us."
